Bishop's Corner
Proud To Be A United Methodist
By Bishop Cornelius L. Henderson
In the last issues of the "Florida United Methodist Review" I
shared with our readers the fact that "I am still proud to be a
United Methodist." As we assemble in Lakeland for our Florida Annual
Conference, May 30-June 2, some additional reasons
include:
- 338,000 plus conference-wide members;
- 700 plus pastors;
- 650 plus pastoral charges;
- 14 districts;
- 48,650 participants in 1999’s conference-wide Sunday school
ministry;
- 34,112 members in 1999’s conference-wide United Methodist Women;
- 13,080 members in 1999’s conference-wide United Methodist Men;
- 15 Florida Conference missionaries;
- 12 missionaries not assigned to the conference, but supported by
conference United Methodist churches;
- 8 World Division "partner church" missionaries supported
by Florida Conference United Methodist churches;
- 5 National Division mission personnel assigned to the conference;
- 15 National Division mission personnel not assigned to the
conference, but supported by conference United Methodist churches;
- nearly 350 short-term volunteers in mission;
- two United Methodist colleges;
- 10 United Methodist campus ministry units in Florida; and
- additionally, we are blessed to have the most devoted lay leaders
and loyal pastors for which one can hope or pray.
According to Dr. David Brazelton, "A new church moves to Florida
each day." Hence, "the fields are white unto harvest—but the
laborers are few."
Obviously, I am excited and elated about and grateful for what God has
done, is doing, and shall do here in the sunshine (SON-SHINE) state.
