Bishops invite men to gather, worship

Praising, witnessing, preaching and sharing are on the agenda for the Bishops’ Invitational for Christ’s Men 2000 at the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center June 24.

Bishops Cornelius L. Henderson, Richard C. Looney and William Morris invite men of all denominations to attend the event sponsored by the United Methodist Men of the Florida, South Georgia and Alabama-West Florida Conferences.

In addition to the three bishops, Dr. John Ed Mathison, pastor of Frazer Memorial United Methodist Church in Montgomery, Ala., and Dr. Hal Brady, pastor of St. Luke United Methodist Church in Columbus, Ga., will preach. Music will be presented by the Frazer Singers from Frazer Memorial United Methodist Church in Montgomery, Ala., and Witness, a quartet from Killearn United Methodist Church in Tallahassee.

The $25 registration fee includes lunch. Registration will be accepted at the door, but will not include lunch. For more information, visit http://www.ummflconf.org

"Expeditions" almost full

More than half the available slots have been reserved already for this year’s "Phil A. Voyd Expeditions 2000" Summer Camp Adventures, and the rest are filling up quickly, according to Mike Standifer, director of the Florida Conference Council on Ministries’ Youth and Events ministry office.

The camping ministry offers nine weekly camp sessions beginning June 5 and ending August 5. High school Group Week is July 17-22. The expedition theme will give campers an encounter with "real-life survival challenges and obstacles," and will teach the skills and knowledge youth need to "live each day for Christ," according to the camp brochure.

The ministry’s children’s camp is for rising fourth- and fifth-graders. The middle school youth camp is for sixth- through eighth-grade students, and high school youth camp is for ninth- through 12th-grade students. In addition, there are four specialty camps: Environmental Camp, Creative Spirit Camp, Water Sports Camp and Camp Pioneer for developmentally and mentally challenged persons age 16 and up.

The cost is $227 per person for regular camp and $247 for the specialty camps. Registration is first-come, first-served.

For more information, contact Standifer at 1-800-282-8011, extension 138, or MStandifer@flumc.org, or visit the ministry’s Web site at http://www.umsummercamp.org

Campers gather for Memorial Day

United Methodists are invited to celebrate the official beginning of summer with the Memorial Day Family Camp May 26-29 at the Life Enrichment Center in Leesburg.

The theme is "Remembrance," and scheduled activities include games, crafts, hiking, shopping, swimming and more.

The cost is $4 plus hook-up fees. For more information, contact Helen Hunt, program coordinator, at 407-299-8093.

Drew offers cyber doctorate

Drew Theological School is offering Doctor of Ministry candidates the opportunity to work toward their degree on-line. Weekly faculty lectures, text-based discussions and 90-minute real-time "cyber discussions" will be available via the internet and video-conferencing software.

The program is intended for applicants who favor "high-tech/high touch ministry in the Third Millennium" or those who live too far from Drew’s campus or its regional groups.

Participants must have their own computer equipment, and some time must still be spent on Drew’s campus in New Jersey.

For more information, contact the Doctor of Ministry office at 973-408-3630 or Dmin@drew.edu
