United Methodist Women “kit-up” for disaster response

GAINESVILLE — The Gainesville District’s United Methodist Women (UMW) spent a day recently sorting and assembling more than 240 school kits and 170 health kits at the Florida Conference’s Disaster Response supply depot in High Springs, Fla., according to Lisa Rhan, one of the conference’s disaster response coordinators.

The supplies for the school kits were collected by conference youth at the Confirmation Convocation last March. The UMW sewed 90 bags for the school kits and is asking women from the conference’s other 13 districts to sew more cloth bags. The Gainesville women collected supplies for the health kits.

The day at the depot was the annual workday for the Gainesville UMW and involved women from many of the district’s churches. “The UMW are active kit collectors year-round, but plan this annual event to help the depot catch up on kit stock,” Rhan said.

For more information on the various kinds of kits churches may collect, contact Lisa Rhan at 386-454-7775 or LISAXBIRD@aol.com or visit the United Methodist Committee on Relief’s Web page at http://gbgm-umc.org/umcor/kits.html.
