United Methodists needed in El Salvador
More volunteer work teams are needed for a
Methodist earthquake relief project in El Salvador. There are 25 teams
from Methodist churches in El Salvador and Puerto Rico and the United
Methodist Church in the United States scheduled through next April,
but at least 20 more teams are needed to meet a commitment to build
300 homes there.
United Methodists are also working with Action
by Churches Together (ACT) supporting the rebuilding of another 200
homes by residents.
Each team should have a maximum of 12 people and
is required to contribute $3,000 for the cost of materials for one
home.
For more information on volunteering, call the
General Board of Global Ministries’ Volunteer Hotline at
1-800-918-3100 or visit http://gbgm-umc.org/vim/elsalvador.htm.
Donations can be made to the relief effort
through the United Methodist Committee on Relief Advance Special
Number 511447-8, “El Salvador Earthquake.”
Gambling initiative seeks responses
Many delegates to the Dare to Share Jesus 2000
Florida Annual Conference Event were asked to deliver packages of
information provided by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)
relating to high school gambling to local high school athletic
directors. Those delegates are now asked to follow up with their local
high schools to find out how the material was used.
Any information received from high schools
regarding the NCAA’s anti-gambling campaign should be forwarded to
Verna Echols, 621 Osceola Ave., Lake Wales, FL 33853-3346. For more
