Crosstrainers is spiritual retreat for students

Crosstrainers ’01 is a weekend spiritual life retreat helping youth and adults be godly in every aspect of their lives through worship, music, prayer and fellowship. This year’s event is Nov. 9-11 at the Warren W. Willis Camp in Leesburg.

The Rev. Stacey Foster, pastor of Renaissance Christian Assembly in Detroit, is the high school worship leader. He regularly speaks to a broad cross-section of people, from youth in public schools to church or men’s gatherings, including several Promise Keepers events. Foster is president of S.O.A.R. (Sold Out And Real) Ministries, a ministry designed to equip, train, inspire and empower the younger generation. The band Paige will provide music for high school worship.

John Sherrill is the middle school worship leader. Sherrill is a youth pastor from Houston and part of Breakaway Ministries, a college Bible study that meets at Texas A&M University weekly, and leads worship for about 3,500 students. The band Spinaround will provide music for middle school worship.

The cost is $95 per person. The registration deadline is Nov. 5. For more information, contact Kym Langston, Florida Conference Council on Ministries’ Youth Ministry office, at KLangston@flumc.org or 863-688-5563, extension 139.

United Methodists needed in El Salvador

More volunteer work teams are needed for a Methodist earthquake relief project in El Salvador. There are 25 teams from Methodist churches in El Salvador and Puerto Rico and the United Methodist Church in the United States scheduled through next April, but at least 20 more teams are needed to meet a commitment to build 300 homes there.

United Methodists are also working with Action by Churches Together (ACT) supporting the rebuilding of another 200 homes by residents.

Each team should have a maximum of 12 people and is required to contribute $3,000 for the cost of materials for one home.

For more information on volunteering, call the General Board of Global Ministries’ Volunteer Hotline at 1-800-918-3100 or visit http://gbgm-umc.org/vim/elsalvador.htm

Donations can be made to the relief effort through the United Methodist Committee on Relief Advance Special Number 511447-8, “El Salvador Earthquake.”

Gambling initiative seeks responses

Many delegates to the Dare to Share Jesus 2000 Florida Annual Conference Event were asked to deliver packages of information provided by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) relating to high school gambling to local high school athletic directors. Those delegates are now asked to follow up with their local high schools to find out how the material was used.

Any information received from high schools regarding the NCAA’s anti-gambling campaign should be forwarded to Verna Echols, 621 Osceola Ave., Lake Wales, FL 33853-3346. For more information, contact Echols at 863-676-0394.
