Board offers grants for youth, young adult ministries

United Methodists working with youth and young adults may obtain grants of up to $15,000 through the Shared Mission Focus on Young People, a joint effort by the General Boards of Church and Society, Global Ministries, Higher Education and Ministry, and Discipleship.

Ministries may receive the grants annually for up to three years. The money is intended for local churches, annual or central conferences, cooperative parishes, ecumenical shared ministries, campus ministries, youth serving agencies and United Methodist organizations working with churches in programs for youth and young adults.

Cuba needs hurricane relief

Hurricane Michelle, a category 4 storm with winds of 130 mph or more caused wide-spread damage in the southern and central parts of Cuba. The Matanzas, Villa Clara and Camag¸ey provinces were the hardest hit, with thousands of people reported homeless.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief has established the Hurricanes 2001 Advance #982350-4 for relief efforts in Cuba. Grants from this fund will provide food, medicine, and household and hygiene supplies, as well as long-term recovery efforts.

Donations can be made through any local United Methodist Church or directly to UMCOR at 1-800-554-8583 or on-line at http://www.disasternews.net/donations/umcor.php.  Donations to the advance should be designated “Cuba.”


Childrenís Home presents 100 parenting seminars

The Florida United Methodist Children’s Home and Dr. Rod Kennedy are offering 100 parenting workshops for the Florida Conference between January 2, 2002 and June 30, 2002.

Kennedy is author of the best selling parenting book, “The Encouraging Parent.”

Churches are invited to select a date Kennedy can visit their community. There is no charge to the church. Travel and lodging expenses are being provided by the Children’s Home.

Evangelists meet in Orlando

The Congress on Evangelism 2002 “Evangelism: Not an Option…a Mandate” is Jan. 7-10 at the Hyatt Orlando in Kissimmee. The Congress is designed to provide the fuel that sends Christians out into the world to make disciples.

The Florida Conference’s Revs. Roger Swanson, David Brazelton and Jorge Acevedo, all from the Florida Conference, will be among the presenters. Steve Harper, dean of Asbury Theological Seminary’s Orlando campus, is the Bible study leader.

The National Association of United Methodist Evangelists’ annual meeting will precede the Congress. It is Jan. 5-7 also at the Hyatt. Whitney Dough, co-founder and host of the Methodist Hour radio program, will be among the meeting’s leaders.

The cost for the Congress is $125 per person or $150 per married couple. United Methodists enrolled in seminary may register for free. There is no cost for the Association meeting.

Lakeland program helps get every member in ministry

The Rev. Dr. John Ed Matheson, pastor of 7,000-member Frazer Memorial United Methodist Church in Montgomery, Ala. and author of “Every Member in Ministry,” will be at Lakeland’s United Methodist Temple Jan. 6-8 for a series of workshops on how to involve laity in ministry.

The Sunday program begins at 7:30 p.m. and focuses on the definition of a minister. On Monday at 7 p.m., Matheson will answer the question, “Can ordinary people do ministry?” His Tuesday program will help churches implement real lay ministry. Matheson will be available after each session to answer questions. For more information, contact United Methodist Temple at 863-688-3114.
