Conference
prepares for Hispanic growth
Hispanics are the largest minority
in Florida, according to the 2000 United States census.
Hispanics make up 16.8 percent of Florida's population,
while blacks, including black Hispanics, account for 14.6
percent.
The Florida Conference is preparing
to meet the challenge of reaching that rapidly growing
population through its support of the Comprehensive Plan
for Hispanic Ministry and its search for a Conference
Hispanic Coordinator. Full Story

Youth
director listens, prays for direction
Mike Standifer, director of the Florida Conference Council on Ministies'
(CCOM) Youth Ministry office, spent three days in isolation in St. Petersburg earlier this
month praying over 90 flip-chart pages of suggestions about what is and is not needed for
youth ministry in the Florida Conference.
The prayer retreat was the second step in a three-part process, which
includes listening, praying and planning, that Standifer is leading to help redirect and
improve the quality of youth ministry in the conference.
The listening was in the form of nine regional listening posts over two
weeks in March. The planning step will take place May 10-12 at the Spring Training Event
for youth ministers.

diversity in disaster response.
Harris is pastor of Mims United
Methodist Church in the Melbourne District and
chairman of the Brevard County Voluntary Organizations

Satellite seminar offers
insight, way to reach out
Business men and women from throughout
the Golden Triangle area around Umatilla spent three hours
at First United Methodist Church of Umatilla learning how
to be better leaders. Some of them have stayed with the
church.
The 600-member church in the Leesburg District served as a downlink
location for Dr. John C. Maxwell's March 24 live satellite broadcast "Developing the
Leader Within You." The seminar was based on his book of the same title and attracted
more than 104,000 participants nationwide, according to Maxwell's Web site. Full Story

Conference delegates vote on
constitutional amendments
Delegates to the Dare to
Share Jesus 2001 Florida Annual Conference Event May 29-June 1 in Lakeland will vote on 11
amendments to the United Methodist Church's Constitution. If approved, the amendments will
change the church's language regarding baptism and membership, create a new paragraph
seeking to eliminate racism, change the definition of "young person" and
recognize that the United Methodist Church was created more than 30 years ago.
To help voting members understand the amendments, the General Board of
Discipleship last month trained one person from each conference to serve as interpreters.
The Rev. Bill Barnes, pastor of Orlando's St. Luke's United Methodist Church, attended the
two-day training in Nashville. Full Story
