Church teaches focus on outreach

Community of Hope, a United Methodist congregation in the West Palm Beach District, is teaching pastors, church staff and laity how to develop an outreach-focused church at its “Called to Excellence” seminar Feb. 9. The teaching will focus on kindness and service evangelism.

The Revs. Steve Sjogren and E. Dale Locke will lead the event. Sjogren is founding pastor of Vineyard Community Church in Cincinnati, Oh., one of the nation’s 25 fastest growing churches, and author of “Conspiracy of Kindness.” Locke is founding pastor of Community of Hope, a four-year-old church with more than 500 in attendance.

Seminar teaches AIDS ministry

The Intentional Growth Center at Lake Junaluska, N.C., is offering “AIDS Ministry: It’s About Love” Feb. 5-7.

Dot Avers, a retired diaconal minister, will lead the seminar. Avers is the Holston Conference’s director of Strength for the Journey, a retreat ministry for people with HIV/AIDS.

Participants will learn how to conduct Strength for the Journey retreats and reach out to people with HIV/AIDS. For more information, contact the Intentional Growth Center at 1-800-482-1442.


Ashram offers spiritual growth

Clergy and laity of all Christian denominations are invited to the Florida Christian Ashram Feb. 25-28 at the Life Enrichment Center in Leesburg. Ashrams, from the Indian word meaning “to be away from work,” are Christ-centered international and interdenominational spiritual retreats. The Ashram movement began in India and was started by Dr. E. Stanley Jones, a Methodist missionary there.

The Rev. Dr. Jerold Vogt, pastor of Leawood United Methodist Church in Kansas, is the evangelist for the event. The Rev. Whitney Dough, evangelist and producer and host of the Methodist Hour radio show, is the Bible teacher.

The cost is $192, single occupancy, or $168, double occupancy. Ministers and missionaries and their spouses receive a 20 percent discount. Scholarships are available. Register by Feb. 8.

Bishop Timothy Whitaker and the Florida Conference Commission on Finance and Administration have approved a free-will offering for the Methodist Church in Cuba. Churches are asked to choose a day to take the offering and submit it to the Florida Conference Treasurer.
