Tampa
Centers face lawsuit over land
TAMPA — Tampa United Methodist Centers (TUMC)
was named as a defendant in a lawsuit filed April 8 with the circuit
court in Hillsborough County. The City of Tampa, Tampa-Hillsborough
Action Plan and Allstate Homes were also named as defendants.
The suit was filed on behalf of homeowners
living in Martin Luther King Village, a subdivision in which TUMC
helped build 20 homes for low-income families. The City of Tampa
requested TUMC’s assistance in developing the housing in 1995. The
lawsuit details allegations that question the location and
construction of the homes in Martin Luther King Village.
The Rev. Louis Jones, TUMC’s executive
director, says the high-profile lawsuit is likely to attract media
attention. “It is our hope that the media will give a fair and
accurate depiction of the issue at hand,” Jones said. “Although we
feel we are not responsible for any of these allegations, Tampa United
Methodist Centers is working to identify any valid concerns the
residents may have regarding their homes.
“As a human services provider for people in
need, TUMC’s primary goal is to empower the people in the
communities we serve. With this in mind, we are dedicated to
identifying any legitimate problems that may exist, and, where
discovered, to addressing the homeowner’s concerns to the extent of
our ability for which TUMC may be responsible.”
Jones invites anyone who has questions or
concerns to contact him at 813-248-6259.
