Seminar teaches effective, ethical signing

Two seminars held at Orlando’s Conway United Methodist Church Sept. 13-14 will teach signers how to be more effective in their ministry and heighten the spiritual and ethical understanding of the Christian interpreter.

Theresa A. King, author of “Effective Religious Interpreters; Insights from a Deaf Perspective,” will lead the two-day seminar, conducted in American Sign Language.

Activities and role playing on Friday will introduce interpreters to Biblical principles for their ministry. Saturday’s sessions will deal with the needs of interpreters, deaf ministries and churches. A panel of deaf and hard-of-hearing people will address issues they face in the church.

Continuing education units for professional studies are available.

The cost is $65 for both sessions before Aug. 17 and $75 thereafter. For more information contact Conway United Methodist Church at 407-277-5010 or King at 407-273-6565 (voice), 407-823-8284 (TTY) or KINGME2@Erols.COM

Short Bites

There is still limited space available at the 2002 Preaching with Presence Workshop Aug. 5-7 at the Life Enrichment Center in Leesburg. Participants must be actively preaching in a United Methodist pulpit. The workshop’s goal is to help preachers maintain a mental and spiritual presence when preaching. The cost is $100 per person. The Florida Conference Disaster Response Ministry has an immediate need for Flood Bucket contents. Its depot has a supply of empty buckets, but needs the items that go inside. Flood Buckets are an essential part of the response to a hurricane. Contact Lisa Rhan at 386-454-7775 or lisaxbird@aol.com  or visit http://gbgm-umc.org/umcor/kits.cfm#Health
