IN BRIEF

Florida Conference ranks in middle in education giving

LAKELAND — The Florida Conference gave $43,613 in 2001 during the two Special Sunday offerings that support United Methodist loans and scholarships. The Western Pennsylvania Conference topped all conferences with $95,892, and the Virginia Conference led the Southeastern Jurisdiction with $55,955.

United Methodist churches throughout the country contribute to denominational loans and scholarships through their annual Student Day offering, and 35 percent of the special offering collected on World Communion Sunday goes toward ethnic scholarships. The denomination collected more than $1.7 million those two days.

Florida ranked among the top 10 conferences in terms of receiving denominational loans and scholarships, with 156 students receiving $192,592 in financial aid. West Ohio received the most, with 247 students receiving $418,474. The South Carolina Conference received the most aid in the Southeastern Jurisdiction with $360,205 going to 215 students.

In 2001, the United Methodist Church provided more than $8.4 million in financial aid to 5,561 students. Financial aid is available to students attending community colleges, undergraduate institutions and graduate schools, including seminaries.
