Florida Conference ranks in middle in
education giving
LAKELAND — The Florida Conference gave $43,613
in 2001 during the two Special Sunday offerings that support United
Methodist loans and scholarships. The Western Pennsylvania Conference
topped all conferences with $95,892, and the Virginia Conference led
the Southeastern Jurisdiction with $55,955.
United Methodist churches throughout the country
contribute to denominational loans and scholarships through their
annual Student Day offering, and 35 percent of the special offering
collected on World Communion Sunday goes toward ethnic scholarships.
The denomination collected more than $1.7 million those two days.
Florida ranked among the top 10 conferences in
terms of receiving denominational loans and scholarships, with 156
students receiving $192,592 in financial aid. West Ohio received the
most, with 247 students receiving $418,474. The South Carolina
Conference received the most aid in the Southeastern Jurisdiction with
$360,205 going to 215 students.
In 2001, the United Methodist Church provided
more than $8.4 million in financial aid to 5,561 students. Financial
aid is available to students attending community colleges,
undergraduate institutions and graduate schools, including seminaries.
