Retired Florida Bishop McDavid dies
LAKELAND — United Methodist Bishop
Joel D. McDavid, who led church regions in Florida and Georgia before
retiring in 1984, died Jan. 8 from a massive stroke. He was 86.
Elected bishop in 1972, McDavid was
appointed to the Florida Conference, where he served eight years.
Following his retirement from the episcopacy in 1984, McDavid served
eight years as bishop in residence at United Methodist-related Candler
School of Theology in Atlanta, where he was instrumental in helping
establish the Frank Sherman scholarships.
T. Howren Norton
The Rev. T. Howren Norton Sr., a
retired Florida Conference elder, died Jan. 9. Norton retired in 1982
after serving the Methodist Church for 44 years.
Ordained in 1941, Norton served as
pastor of churches in Jacksonville, Palatka, Lake Worth, Hollywood,
Tampa and Brandon. He was superintendent of the Orlando District from
1964 until 1969.
Barbara H. Odom
The Rev. Barbara H. Odom, pastor of
Lakewood United Methodist Church in the St. Petersburg District, died
Dec. 4. Odom was serving her first appointment in the Florida
Conference. She was also chairwoman of the Florida Conference’s
committee on the Council of Bishops’ Initiative on Children and
Poverty and Hope for the Children of Africa.
H. Mauriece Felton
The Rev. H. Mauriece Felton, a retired
Florida Conference elder, died Nov. 29. Felton retired in 1977 after
serving the Methodist Church for 37 years.
Ordained in 1942, Felton served
churches in Madison County, Tallahassee, Cross City, Venice-Englewood,
College Park, Palatka, Mt. Dora, Hialeah, Jacksonville, Vero Beach,
Ormond Beach, Lake Wales and Ft. Lauderdale.
Harry M. Middlebrooks
The Rev. Harry M. Middlebrooks, a
retired Florida Conference elder, died Sept. 28. Middlebrooks retired
from the Florida Conference in 1981 after serving the Methodist Church
for nearly 25 years.
Ordained in 1954, Middlebrooks served
as pastor of churches in Branford, St. Petersburg and Williston. He
also served with the Methodist Foundation from 1969 until his
retirement.
Sergio A. Jardon
The Rev. Sergio A. Jardon, pastor of
Calvary United Methodist Church in Lake Wales, died Sept. 27. Jardon
served the United Methodist Church for 16 prior to his death.
Jardon served as pastor of churches in
Cross City, Hialeah, Green Cove Springs, Orlando, Neptune Beach and
Palatka.
