Bishop invites youth to confirmation convocation

Students, teachers and pastors of confirmation classes throughout the Florida Conference are invited to the 2003 Bishop’s Confirmation Convocation March 29 from 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Palm Beach Gardens. The event is geared toward 6th- and 7th-grade students participating in a confirmation class.

Conference Table meets in Sarasota

The next gathering of the Florida Conference’s Conference Table is Feb. 15 at First United Methodist Church, Sarasota. The gathering will begin at 9:30 a.m with a recap of the previous sessions. Worship begins at 10 a.m., followed by the work session, which will end at 4 p.m.

This gathering is expected to finalize the Florida Conference’s vision and mission statements and begin work on setting priorities for the conference.

Church offers transformational simulcasts

First United Methodist Church, Umatilla, is offering a series of learning opportunities for church leaders via satellite simulcasts.

“A New Year, A New You in 2003: The Spiritually Alive Woman” is Feb. 1 from noon until 3 p.m. This program features authors Valerie Bell, Lisa Harper and Priscilla Evans Shirer leading a time of renewal and fellowship for women.

“Developing Leaders” is Feb. 11 from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. George Barna of the Barna Research Group teaches why and how to raise up leaders from among church membership.

“Parenting Teens” is Feb. 20 from 7:30 until 9 p.m. This program offers practical insights and encouragement for parents of teenagers.

Church presents diversity musical

The Arts at St. Johns, a ministry of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Miami Beach, presents “Journeys to Freedom,” a new musical celebration of the diversity of Miami, Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Nautilus Auditorium in Miami Beach.

The production celebrates the diversity of people who live in Miami and the nearby beach communities, including Hispanics, Caribbean Islanders, African-Americans and Anglos of all ages.

Camping ministry celebrates Presidents’ Day

The Florida Conference’s Camping Ministry will hold its Presidents’ Day weekend Feb. 14-17 at the Family Campground, part of the Life Enrichment Center in Leesburg.

Seminar provides hands-on training for church musicians

The Music Gallery in Clearwater invites all music ministers, choir directors, organists, pianists, music teachers and pastors to “Breakfast with Nielson & Young,” a morning of music and instruction from two premier church musicians. The seminar is Feb. 15 from 8:30 a.m. until noon at the Hilton on Lois Avenue in Tampa.

Stephen Nielson and Ovid Young will discuss hymn arrangements and performance and will explain how to enhance a church’s music ministry.

Gainesville church presents African Children’s Choir

Gainesville’s Trinity United Methodist Church is presenting a free concert by the African Children’s Choir Feb. 16 at 6:30 p.m.

The choir is composed of children between 7 and 12 years of age who come from five countries in Africa—Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Nigeria and Ghana. Many of them are from very poor backgrounds or are orphans. The choir supports and helps educate thousands of children, many of whom have suffered due to wars and famine. It raises funds to build and staff schools in large cities and in villages in the bush in an effort to provide education to children even in the remotest, most conflict-ridden areas of the country.
