Seminary seminar teaches empowering laity

The Rev. Dick Wills, senior pastor of Christ Church United Methodist in Ft. Lauderdale, will lead a seminar titled “Empowering the Laity” at Asbury Theological Seminary’s Orlando campus May 23 from 9:30 a.m. until noon. Wills’ presentation is part of the equipping seminars provided by the Florida Conference’s Celebrate Jesus ministry.

Wills will focus on what laity and clergy can do to prepare for changes that are inevitable in today’s church and how they can work together during times of change. A question-and-answer session follows.

Historical society holds annual dinner

The Florida Conference Historical Society invites those interested in the history of Methodism to its 13th annual dinner May 27 at 5:30 p.m. in Hollingsworth Room A at the Lakeland Center.

Peggy Miller, a Christian dramatist, will portray the story of Susanna Wesley, the Mother of Methodism.

The dinner and program will precede the evening session of Annual Conference, which will celebrate the tercentennial of John Wesley’s birth.

Publisher offers Wesley tercentennial edition

UMR Communications, the publisher of the “Florida United Methodist Review,” is offering a new resource celebrating the 300th anniversary of the birth of John Wesley titled “JW300.”

The 16-page edition can be used as an educational tool with Sunday school classes, youth groups or individuals who want to learn more about the heritage of the United Methodist Church.

“Companions” offers Jacksonville leader training

The “Companions in Christ” series, a transformational small group experience produced by Upper Room Ministries, is offering a leader training event June 7 at Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church in Jacksonville.

The training provides potential leaders with an in-depth experience of the 28-week “Companions in Christ” resource and a brief introduction to the later releases in the series. Participants will learn what skills are needed when leading formational groups.

Tampa church presents drama workshop

Churches are invited to discover techniques for dramatically presenting the Gospel message and learn how to take a story from Scripture and present it in an impacting and engaging way. The Covenant Players, a touring Christian drama ministry, will present a workshop in drama ministry May 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Tampa’s Hyde Park United Methodist Church.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is increasing its presence in Iraq to help “rebuild the lives of our Iraqi neighbors into the foreseeable future,” said Paul Dirdak, UMCOR’s deputy general secretary.
