Florida Residents Named to
Candler’s Sherman Scholarship Board
LAKELAND — The Rev. Dr. William S. Barnes, pastor of St. Luke’s United
Methodist Church in Orlando, has been named to the Sherman Advisory
Board of Emory University’s Candler School of Theology.
Barnes, a 1973 graduate of Emory’s Goizueta Business School and
1976 graduate of Candler, is also a recipient of the Candler
Distinguished Alumni Award.
Other Sherman Advisory Board members from the Florida Annual
Conference are: Bishop Timothy Whitaker, Lakeland; Bishop J. Lloyd
Knox, St. Petersburg; and Curtis Hyers and Ruth Wilcox, Jacksonville.
The Rev. Gene Zimmerman of Jacksonville is chairman of the board.
The Sherman Advisory Board provides guidance regarding Candler’s
Sherman Scholarship program. Established by Frank and Helen Sherman of
Jacksonville in 1982, the Sherman program has funded more than 400
Candler graduates now serving as United Methodist pastors around the
country.
Current Sherman scholars from the Florida Annual Conference are
Jake Brady, Arindall Burks, John Mattox and John Mullaney.
Members of Florida Conference elected to Southeastern Jurisdiction
association
LAKELAND — The Southeastern Jurisdiction of United Methodist
Association of Church Business Administrators (SEJUMACBA) met in Lake
Junaluska, N.C., in August for its annual conference and installation
of new officers.
Elected from the Florida Conference are John McCready, president,
Coronado Community United Methodist Church, New Smyrna Beach; Rod
McClarnon, president elect, Mariner United Methodist Church, Spring
Hill; Carol Lenhart, treasurer, Aloma United Methodist Church,
Orlando; and Terry Coon, member at large, Indian River City United
Methodist Church, Titusville.
The 2004 conference will be held Aug. 2-5, and the emphasis will be
“Strategic Planning for Building.”
