Searching the Contents of PDF Files on a Web Site

Adobe Systems does not make a search engine that enables you to search the contents of all PDF files on a Web site. Therefore, you can't search the contents of a site's PDF files the same way you can search a site's HTML pages using a Web search engine (e.g., Hotbot or Yahoo). To search the contents of PDF files on a Web site, you can use Acrobat's Find and Search commands on individual PDF
files as you view them, or use a third-party PDF search engine.

Acrobat's Find and Search Commands

Acrobat's Find and Search commands let you search for specific text. The Find command lets you search within a PDF file you're viewing that is stored on your hard disk. It also lets you search a file you're viewing in a Web browser when you've got Acrobat 3.01 or later installed.

The Search command lets you search for information in multiple PDF files by checking information in Acrobat index files created in Acrobat Catalog. Index files and the Search command cannot be used within Web browsers -- the search query is performed by the Search plug-in on your local computer, which can search only local index files and their associated PDF files.

Third-Party Search Engines

A variety of third-party Web search engines are available, some of which can search PDF files on your site. For example, Verity (who worked with Adobe Systems to create the Acrobat Find and Search functions, as well as Acrobat Catalog) offers search engines that can search your entire site, including PDF files. For information about Web search engines that support searching PDF files, click "Web-Related Resources" on Adobe's Web site at www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/resources.html.
