Helpful Hints for setting up a church web site.

There is free web space provided for all UMC local churches provided by the General Board of Global Ministries. (5 megabytes=lots and lots) Application is located on the web and accepted via email. Go to http://gbgm-umc.org/churches/ The GBGM site has pages dedicated to helping you setup a web site with graphics to download and use.

Have at least one member of your church web committee sign up for the UMConnect mailing list to get access to the thoughts and concerns (even the lessons learned) by other Web servents (local church web masters).
Go to http://gbgm-umc.org/churches/  to sign up. Most churches are finding it more difficult to start a web site with a committee. Answers to important questions may be answered by the folks on UMConnect.

Look around for shareware and freeware utilities which can make tasks easier.
Examples:    LViewPro        WS_FTP         Paint Shop Pro

Many web creators use others ideas and pages to getting up and running fast. You should know that taking (downloading) other's pages is allowed. When in doubt about graphics and text, which may be copyrighted, ask the webmaster of the site for permission.

Many of the new applications on the market can publish HTML (Word97, Word95 with downloaded internet assistants, WordPerfect 7 and 8 etc.) which makes creating the code a snap. Look at the menu choices or help to find the right procedures for your software.

Church employees can currently purchase an academic version (no paper manuals) of Corel Office (WordPerfect, Quattro Pro ) for about $49.00. Call Cokesbury for details.

Free email from JUNO. No excuse for not getting connected. Free. FREE. (Need windows computer, phone line and modem)

One of the hardest parts of making a nice site is the GRAPHICS.
You can spend lots of money but you don't have to.
Four ways to get good graphics.
        1. Borrow them (with permission) off the web
        2. Scan them in. (Good scanners cost $150 now.)
        3. Video capture cards
        4. Photo processing (film to 3.5 inch disks)

Any questions? Ask a 15 year old church member. Many of them are on the net all the time and are learning some of these things in school.
