Retreat offers resources for deaf/disabled ministries

Beginning sign language, signing to music and other topics to help local churches become more accessible to people with hearing impairments will be discussed at the fourth annual Deaf/Disabled Ministries Retreat May 21-23 at the Life Enrichment Center in Leesburg.

Themed “Come Unto Me,” the retreat is designed to help churches learn how to reach out to the 98 percent of the deaf population that remains unchurched, according to Toni Parrish, leader of the Florida Conference Deaf Ministry Team. In addition to workshops, there will be time for participants to share ideas, hopes and visions for ministry.

For more information on the retreat, contact Parrish at 941-355-0815 (v/tdd) or thpdeaf@aol.com, or Jean Powell at 352-728-3220 (v/tdd) or tompwyl@aol.com. The registration deadline is May 3.).

Video helps church historians

Church historians asking themselves: “What do I do with all this stuff?” will be interested in a video now available from the Conference Resource Center titled “Memory and Ministry: Caring for Your Church’s Heritage.”

The 30-minute video and accompanying guide are designed to help local church historians, committees on records and history, and church administrators determine what to do to manage and preserve the congregation’s historical records, documents, photographs and artifacts. The video was produced by the General Commission on Archives and History.

For more information, contact Caryl Kelley in the conference’s Resource Center at 1-800-282-8011, extension 115, or CKelley@flumc.org;   or Conference Archivist Nell Thrift at 941-688-9276.
