SPRING HILL Helen
Pottorff, a member of Shady Hills United Methodist Church here, holds a Bahamian child
during a recent mission trip to San Andros Island in the Bahamas. The poverty on the
island has forced its young people to look elsewhere for employment. Many of them leave
behind their children to be raised by grandparents.
Twelve youth and 10 adults from the church spent seven days on the island painting,
repairing and improving houses, many of which had no running water or electricity,
cleaning up the land around churches, and coordinated youth rallies and Bible schools for
almost 140 people in three towns.
"We all came home with a new appreciation for one another, for what God has
blessed us with, and for the love of Christ working in and through us," said Saralyn
Duarte, the churchs secretary and an adult member of the mission team.
