Olympic Lessons: Where Do We Go From Here?

By Bishop Cornelius L. Henderson

Bishop Cornelius L. HendersonThe 27th Olympiad closed out with a spectacular bang. Obviously, the games are exciting. However, I am thrilled and chilled by the opening and closing ceremonies.

There are numerous messages, lessons that appeared to others and me. To name a few, they are:

Many small nations are represented.

Athletes are highly disciplined.

Athletes are very well-trained.

Even the best make some errors.

There is multi-diversity.

Traditions are continued in a throwaway age.

I found myself crying, with a lump in my throat, as the United States National Anthem was played. We, as citizens, should be proud of the young men and women who represented us.

One major question remains — "Where do we go from here?"

There are many possibilities:

Go back to business as usual.

Can/package some of the enthusiasm and share it with others back home.

Increase the circle of friendship to include those who are normally left out.

Continue to practice discipline in all areas of life.

Respect, even love, others who are different.

The epistle of the Hebrews 12:1b-2a suggests, "…let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith."

My hope is renewed in humankind. May the spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood permeate every corner of the world.
