Budget, recommendations pass at special session
"More than six hours of sometimes heated debate Oct. 5 at the special called session of the Dare to Share Jesus 2000 Florida Annual Conference Event resulted in an amended 2001 budget and a new clergy health insurance payment structure, but few changes to the way the conference budgets or conducts business.

New treasurer says prioritizing is key to meeting challenges
Dr. Randy Casey-Rutland was elected conference treasurer Oct. 5 at the special one-day session of the Dare to Share Jesus 2000 Florida Annual Conference Event after serving as interim treasurer for nearly seven months. He said that, as treasurer, he wants to help the conference make decisions about the type and quality of ministry it does.

Flood buckets help Miami cleanup
A little more than a year after Tropical Storm Irene caused widespread flooding across much of south Florida, a feeder band from a tropical depression dumped as much as 18" of rain on parts of Miami and surrounding Dade and Broward counties Oct. 3. Nearly 25,000 homes were damaged. The Florida Conference responded by sending more than 500 flood buckets, and local churches are working with other relief agencies to map out long-term relief strategies.

Olympian says gold medal is key to touching lives |
Dr. Dot Richardson is a veteran of the softball team at Faith United Methodist Church, Orlando. She is also a member of the United States' women's softball team which won the two first-ever Olympic gold medals in softball, the first in Atlanta in 1996 and the second in the recent 2000 games in Sydney, Australia.
While softball has opened many doors for Richardson, she says her success, especially in the Olympics, has opened many doors for her to touch people's lives in positive

Churches focus on marketing
A While Jesus' commission to his disciples to "go therefore and make disciples of all nations" (Mt 28:19a RSV) seems simple enough, churches are finding it increasingly difficult to meet that challenge in today's society. With the abundance of media and messages competing for people's attention, pastors and church communicators in the Florida Conference are trying different ways to get their message across.
Several churches, however, have found that by focusing their message and carefully choosing their media, they can succeed in reaching their target audiences.
