Women invited to rest from responsibilities

Women who want to experience spiritual renewal away from the responsibilities of home, family and work should attend the 15th annual Leesburg Women's Retreats. They'll also get the chance to hear Ruth Graham McIntyre, daughter of evangelist Billy Graham, one of the Retreats' featured speakers.

Creation by God and redemption and reconciliation through Jesus Christ are the themes for the four weekend retreats, held at the Life Enrichment Center Jan. 22-24, Feb. 12-14, Feb. 26-28 and Mar. 12-14.

A special offering will be taken to support the ministries of the Ft. Pierce Community Child Care Center and Tallahassee Refuge House. The child care center offers a 12-hour school for pre-kindergarten children and is supported by the Council of Bishops' Initiative on Children and Poverty (BICAP). The Tallahassee Refuge House is a shelter for victims of domestic violence.

Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, please contact Birk Mullinax in the Conference Council on Ministries' Discipleship and Church and Society office at 1-800-282-8011, extension 141, or e-mail: bmullinax@flumc.org.

Scholarships available for Wesley study in England

Many United Methodists dream of making a pilgrimage to England to see the sites and study the impact the Wesley family has had on their faith. The 1999 Wesley Study Retreat June 20-29 offers Florida clergy and their spouses that occasion, and with five scholarships available, clergy may be selected to make the journey at practically no cost to themselves.

Established by a resolution of the Florida Annual Conference in 1991, the retreat is designed to educate, inspire and challenge clergy to rediscover their understanding of the Wesleys and better equip them for evangelistic outreach.

Each scholarship covers the cost of transportation, lodging and most meals for the clergy member and spouse. "Any clergy person serving full time in a pastoral appointment in the Florida Conference who has completed at least five years of service and is at least five years away from retirement may apply," the Rev. Phillip Roughton, this year's retreat leader, said. "Persons who have applied in the past, but have not been selected, are eligible to reapply each year."

Applications may be obtained from the Conference Registrar's Office in Lakeland. The application deadline is Jan. 15. Those awarded scholarships will be notified by April 15. For more information, contact Roughton at First United Methodist Church, Ormond Beach, at 904-677-3581 or by e-mail at PRoughton@aol.com.

Florida Southern invites United Methodists
to Christmas gala

All Florida Conference United Methodists are invited to usher in the Christmas season with Florida Southern College (FSC) at its annual Christmas Gala for United Methodist churches.

Held Dec. 4 from 7 to 9 p.m. at FSC's Branscomb Auditorium in Lakeland, the gala will feature classical and contemporary holiday music performed by FSC students and faculty. The Concert Chorale, jazz ensemble, Southern Singers, woodwind choir, and symphonic band and orchestra will be featured.

All clergy and laity of Florida Conference United Methodist churches are invited. Seating is limited, so reservations are required and taken on a first-come, first-served basis.

A holiday buffet will be served prior to the gala for $7 per person. The gala is $8. Reservation cards are available at all United Methodist churches.
