United Methodist Communications offers scholarships, fellowships

United Methodist Communications (UMCom) is offering grant, scholarship and fellowship programs to help improve the quality of religion communication for students wishing to continue their education.

Stoody-West fellowship

Two $6,000 Stoody-West fellowship grants will assist Christians engaged in religious journalism or planning to enter the field with graduate study at a United States accredited and approved school or department. The application deadline is Feb. 15.

Racial Ethnic Minority fellowship

United Methodist Communications (UMCom) offers an ethnic-minority United Methodist who is interested in religion communications as a career a one-year fellowship to work and learn in a conference communications program. The recipient will be placed in an annual conference to work and be mentored by an experienced communicator. The fellowship will be July 1, 1999 through June 30, 2000. Salary will be $30,000 plus benefits, moving expenses and travel. The application deadline is March 29.

Leonard M. Perryman communications scholarship for ethnic minority students

Two $2,500 Leonard M. Perryman grants will assist ethnic-minority undergraduate students who intend to pursue careers in religious communications and are enrolled in their junior or senior years. The application deadline is Feb. 15.

Gift of Hope: 21st Century Scholars program helps students

The United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry is offering scholarships to students who have demonstrated leadership in the United Methodist Church.

The four-year, $4 million special scholarship program will provide $1,000 scholarship awards to 1,000 United Methodist students each year through the church-wide Board of Higher Education and Ministry’s Office of Loans and Scholarships. The program’s goal is to prepare a new generation of Christian leaders for the church.

The new scholarship program will help United Methodist students attending any regionally accredited academic institution in the United States. Applications for the new scholarships will be available beginning in January. The deadline for applying is June 1, 1999.

Society seeks gleaning leader for Florida

The Society of St. Andrew’s (SoSA) goal is to meet the needs of poor and hungry people. To help meet that goal in Florida, it is looking for a Florida program coordinator.

Located in Orlando, the full-time position offers a starting salary of $20,000. Persons interested must be able to supervise the gleaning network, including recruiting farmers and produce supervisors and training field supervisors. Responsibilities also include fund raising and implementing educational programs with churches and civic groups.
