Bishop challenges conference to be apostolic  
Bishop Tim Whitaker's receives a globe from conference missions ministry team  Bishop Timothy W. Whitaker challenged members of the Florida Conference to recover the spirit and the power of Jesus' apostles as they share the gospel in a skeptical and sometimes hostile world.
    Whitaker's message was the theme of his first sermon to the annual conference, delivered during his installation service the first night of the Dare to Share Jesus 2001 Florida Annual Conference Event.

Conference raises half of school goal
     Churches, groups and individuals in the Florida Conference gave more than half the $250,000 total needed to build the Bishop Cornelius L. and Dorothye Henderson Secondary School in Muxungue, Mozambique, Africa, at the Dare to Share Jesus 2001 Florida Annual Conference Event.
    Bishop Timothy Whitaker announced May 31 that $133,844.13 was collected during the previous night's celebration featuring the Council of Bishops' Initiative on Children and Poverty and Hope for the Children of Africa. Gifts and donations made prior to the conference brought the total amount given to the school to $188,281.23.    Full Story


Ordination, evangelism highlight bishop's first conference
Annual Conference Ordination Service  Bishop Timothy W. Whitaker said his first annual conference event as a bishop was marked by powerful experiences and learning opportunities.
    Whitaker, who was elected bishop Feb. 27 and began serving the Florida Conference April 2, presided over the Dare to Share Jesus 2001 Florida Annual Conference Event May 29-June 1 in Lakeland.
    He said he was "quite comfortable" presiding at his first annual conference and appreciated the patience and acceptance people showed him.

Florida supports amendments to denomination's constitution
    Delegates to the Dare to Share Jesus 2001 Florida Annual Conference Event voted May 30 overwhelmingly in favor of 11 amendments to the United Methodist Church's constitution.
    The amendments, which were passed at the 2000 General Conference in Cleveland, Ohio, are being considered for ratification by United Methodists throughout the world. The Council of Bishops will certify the amendments if they receive approval from two-thirds of the total number of people voting at all of the annual conferences in the United States and in the Central Conferences in other parts of the world. The voting is expected to be completed later this year.    Full Story        
     

Conference preacher envisions Christ-like world    
Bishop James R. King Jr. of the Kentucky Area of the United Methodist Church    "Where ever someone sees a steeple, inside they should find a loving people," said Bishop James R. King Jr., bishop of the Kentucky Area of the United Methodist Church. "We shouldn't need someone telling people in the church to be kind."
    King was the guest preacher at the Dare to Share Jesus 2001 Florida Annual Conference Event May 29-June 1 here. He challenged the lay and clergy delegates to take an active part in making the world more Christ-like.

Pastor recalls Big Meeting at memorial service  
 St. Andrews Pipes and Drums from Highland Cathedra  The Rev. Charles Courtoy, who retired this year as executive director of the Florida Conference's Committee on New Church Development and Church Redevelopment, gave the sermon during the memorial service held the second day of the Dare to Share Jesus 2001 Florida Annual Conference Event.
    Courtoy recalled an annual event at his boyhood church called the Big Meeting, a three-day celebration that was feast, family reunion and annual conference event with baptisms, communion, foot washing and sermons preached by every preacher in attendance.
    Courtoy said he learned about Christian hospitality and preparation at the Big Meeting.
