Bush helps build Habitat house
President
George W. Bush helped fellow United Methodists construct a Habitat for Humanity house June
5 for a Tampa area family.
Bush spent about an hour helping a team of mostly United Methodist
pastors from the Tampa District raise a wall in the house, which will be home to a single
mother, her two children, two siblings and her mother.
The house is sponsored by the Florida Conference's Tampa District,
which is raising the $45,000 needed for materials and supplies, according to the Rev.
David Brazelton, former superintendent of the Tampa District. Full

Conference
responds to fire and rain
More than 345,500 acres in Florida have been charred by 3,274
wildfires as of June 4, according to the Florida Division of Forestry. On June 12, the
remnants of Tropical Storm Allison dropped as much as a foot of rain on parts of north
Florida, causing flooding in Pensacola, Tallahassee and along the Gulf Coast.
Churches in the Tallahassee, Gainesville and Leesburg districts are
responding directly to these disasters with support from the Florida Conference Disaster
Response ministry. Full Story

Church follows Jesus'
example, washes feet of poor
Thirty-three volunteers
from First United Methodist Church in Miami washed the feet of 111 homeless men and women
April 21. They also distributed socks and shoes, while podiatry students from Miami's
Barry University provided free foot care.
The foot washing is a biannual event for the church, which is involved
in a number of ministries to the poor and homeless in Miami. Full Story

Small church helps fight big
fire
As many as 20 members of Branford United
Methodist Church in Branford provided relief to more than 450 firefighters who came from
around the country to fight Florida's largest wildfire this year.
The Mallory Swamp fire, which was sparked on Mother's Day and burned
for more than two weeks, charred more than 61,000 acres of swampland northwest of
Gainesville, according to Jim Lee, a member of the Branford church.
During those two weeks, the Branford church
led an ecumenical effort to provide firefighters with food, paper towels, candy, water,
sports drinks, aspirin and other supplies. Full Story

Leaders focus on Hispanic
youth
Twenty-five youth ministers
and pastors from Hispanic and Brazilian congregations in Miami, Tampa and Orlando met at
First United Methodist Church, Kissimmee, for a day-long training event for leaders of
Hispanic youth ministries.
Yohanka Cabezas, a member of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in
West Palm Beach and director of the conference's Hispanic Youth Ministry Team, said this
event was the first step in organizing the various Hispanic youth ministries throughout
the conference.
