ORLANDO - The Rev. William S.
Barnes, pastor of Orlando's St. Luke's United Methodist Church,
was one of five people from Orlando to receive a Jefferson Award. The
Jefferson Awards are a national recognition program often called the
Nobel Prize of public service, according to a release from WESH-TV,
the awards' local sponsor.
Barnes was awarded for his service as board
president and founder of Shepherd's Hope, a faith-based volunteer
organization developed as an outreach ministry of St. Luke's in
cooperation with other community groups. Shepherd's Hope provides
access to health care for uninsured people throughout Central Florida.
Barnes will also be considered for entry in the
National Jefferson Awards. One of the local winners will be selected
to attend a dinner honoring award winners in Washington, D.C.
LAKELAND
- Two Florida Conference committees elected new officers last month.
The elections were the result of resignations by former leadership of
both committees. The Rev. Bob Standifer resigned as president
of the conference's Commission on Finance and Administration
(CF&A) and was replaced by Bill Johnson, an accountant from
Tampa and former CF&A vice president. The Rev. Dan Johnson,
pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church, Gainesville, was elected
vice president.
Jack Evans resigned as president of the
Florida Conference Board of Trustees. Leland McKeown, vice
president of the board, replaced Evans, and the Rev. Neil McMullen,
director of the Suncoast Gerontology Center in Tampa, was elected vice
president.
