Annual event features new worship lineup
Delegates to this year's Florida Annual Conference Event May 28-31 in Lakeland will encounter a worship experience that is different in many ways from past years', according to the Rev. Brenda Lewis, campus minister at Florida Southern College and chairwoman of the event's worship committee.
This year's event features a service of reconciliation and repentance for racism in the evening May 29. Other worship services are set for different times than in the past to add more emphasis to individual services and a better flow to the overall worship experience.

Religion is tool in conflict over land
Violence between Israelis and Palestinians is not done in a vacuum and is not based on religion, said the Rev. Alex Awad, a General Board of Global Ministries (GBGM) missionary in Bethlehem.
Awad is a Palestinian Christian. He pastors a church in Jerusalem and works with his brother, the Rev. Dr. Bishara Awad, at the Bethlehem Bible College, a ministry supported through GBGM's Advance for Christ and His Church.
He said the violence in the Middle East is not the root of the problem, but a symptom. The cause of the violence is the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Golan Heights, which began in 1967. The Palestinians want that land as a homeland, Awad said.

Mission team bears fruit in India
In February, 14 members of Grace United Methodist Church in Cape Coral spent 11 days ministering to women and children in the slums in and around Hydrabad, India, and building a church in a nearby village.
It is the first international mission project undertaken by a church that has more than 1,400 in worship each Sunday and has built a solid reputation for mission and ministry within its own community.

Lay leader struggles after 9-11 attacks
David Lundquist makes no apologies about what he does for a living. "I'm in the bomb business, and business is booming," Lundquist said. He works for defense contractor Lockheed-Martin in Orlando and is involved in a cooperative program with an Israeli company.
Lundquist is also the lay leader at Orlando's St. Luke's United Methodist Church and involved in spiritual development ministry there.
The events of Sept. 11, 2001, caused Lundquist to examine his life in light of his Christian faith.

Commission recognizes ministers' anniversaries
The Florida Conference Commission on Archives and History will recognize elders who are celebrating significant anniversaries of their ordination as deacons at the 2002 Florida Annual Conference Event, May 28-31 in Lakeland.
