School offers insight for new,
turnaround churches
The School of Congregational Development is a
“practical, very user-friendly” learning experience for pastors in
new, turnaround and high-potential churches, according to the Rev.
Mont Duncan, the Florida Conference’s director of New Church
Development and Church Redevelopment.
The School is Aug. 1-6 on the West Campus of
First United Methodist Church, Houston, and is sponsored by the Joint
Committee for Congregational Development, General Board of Global
Ministries and General Board of Discipleship.
This year’s featured speakers are the Rev.
Kirbyjohn Caldwell, pastor of Windsor Village United Methodist Church
in Houston, and Dr. Tony Campolo. Individual classes are taught by
pastors and leaders with experience in new, turnaround and
high-potential situations.
Duncan said he is excited about this year’s
emphasis on existing churches, both those in turnaround situations and
those with high potential for future growth. He said the School is
also “an inclusive experience” with classes emphasizing leadership
in racial-ethnic faith communities.
The cost is $400 plus housing and travel. The
registration deadline is July 1, but registration is limited to the
first 600 people and is on a first-come-first-served basis. For more
information, contact Duncan at 1-800-282-8011, extension 147, or MDuncan@flumc.org.
