Silo accident affects camps staff

LEESBURG — Michael Collins, 22, died May 1 after falling into a 100-foot-tall silo filled with corn. Collins lived in Wildwood and worked at Hillandale Farms just outside Bushnell where the accident occurred. He was the son-in-law of Jay Frizzell, a groundskeeper at the Life Enrichment Center and Warren W. Willis Camp in Leesburg.

Rhan speaks at hurricane conference

TAMPA — Bill Rhan, the Florida Conference’s disaster response coordinator, was one of the guest speakers at the 2002 Governor’s Hurricane Conference May 20-24 at the Tampa Convention Center. Rhan discussed strategies for not-for-profit agencies dealing with more than one disaster event and starting and maintaining community collaborations.

Disaster team offers wildfire prevention tips

HIGH SPRINGS — With hurricane season beginning in June, many people forget about the current dry season and potential for wildfires, according to Bill Rhan, the conference’s disaster response coordinator.

“Fires can start small but very quickly develop into a disastrous wildfire,” he said.

Rhan offers the following wildfire prevention tips:

Install electrical lines underground, if possible.

Keep tree and shrub limbs trimmed so they don’t come in contact with wires.

Prune all branches around residences to a height of eight to 10 feet. Keep trees free of dead or dying wood and moss.

Clean roof surfaces regularly.

Remove debris from gutters.

Store combustible or flammable materials in approved safety containers and away from the house.

Keep chimneys clean and install spark arrestors on them.

Install smoke detectors on every level of your home and near sleeping areas.

Make evacuation plans. Plan routes of escape.

Keep disaster supplies on hand.

Develop an emergency communications plan in case family members are separated.

Rhan advises having a fire extinguisher available and never leaving a fire unattended. “Avoid open burning during dry seasons,” he said, adding people should know and observe their local fire codes.
