Advance team sees children who need hope
The Rev. David Beers, pastor of Silver Palm United Methodist Church in Homestead, and Ray Bartholomew, a member of First United Methodist Church, Ft. Myers, and director of the Ft. Myers District United Methodist Volunteers in Mission, traveled to Africa April 11-26 on a search and relate mission.
They met with government and church leaders in the Northern Conference of the Mozambique area of the United Methodist Church to facilitate the construction phase of the Bishop Cornelius L. and Dorothye Henderson Secondary School and bring a progress report back to Bishop Timothy W. Whitaker and delegates to the 2002 Florida Annual Conference Event.

Retreat gives potential ministers answers
Nancy Metz, a 49-year-old member of First United Methodist Church, Cape Coral, was "looking for someone to tell me, 'Yes' or 'No'…God is or isn't calling me."
"I have, in the last year and a half to two years, felt like I'm being called by God into ministry," Metz said. "I need to have a vocation and not just another job, and I'm realizing ministry is a good fit."
Metz was one of 210 people who attended the "Is God Calling Me?" retreat April 26-28 at the Warren W. Willis Camp in Leesburg. The retreat was designed to help people who believe they are being called into full-time Christian ministry to more clearly discern their call.

Military chaplains impact different front
The tragedy of Sept. 11 has focused more attention on people serving in the United States' armed forces. In Florida, United Methodist pastors have a special opportunity to address the spiritual needs of military personnel.
Approximately 20 chaplains are currently serving the Florida National Guard, and there are opening for another five, according the Rev. David Fuller, senior pastor of Brandon's St. Andrews United Methodist Church.

Tampa area churches see results from national media campaign
A recent informal survey of Tampa District churches found many reporting significant increases in attendance for the Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday worship service compared to last year.
Tampa District Superintendent Bert Blomquist said the denomination's Igniting Ministry media campaign and the Tampa and St. Petersburg districts' local campaign "contributed greatly" to the improved attendance.
