Men rally in Tallahassee

The United Methodist Men (UMM) from the Florida, South Georgia and Alabama/West Florida Conferences invite all men, regardless of church affiliation, to attend the “Men’s Rally for Christ” Aug. 10 at the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center.

The one-day event will feature the Rev. Dr. Eddie Fox and Coach Bobbie Bowden of Florida State University. The Tallahassee Boys Choir and Witness Quartet will help provide musical leadership.

Lay speakers fan the flames

The Florida Conference Lay Speaking Ministries invite lay people to attend the “Fanning the Flames” training event Aug. 23-25 at the Life Enrichment Center in Leesburg. The event is open to all current and prospective lay speakers.

Five advanced lay speaking courses will be offered and are designed to help lay speakers preach, lead Bible study or small groups, interpret their United Methodist heritage, and grow through grace.

The workshop fee is $45; lodging and meals are $95, double occupancy, or $110, single occupancy. The registration deadline is July 31. Board presents workshops on hate, violence

Youth, laity and clergy interested in confronting violence, hatred and intolerance in their communities are invited to attend the “Confronting and Combating the Seeds of Hatred, Intolerance and Violence” workshops Aug. 23-24 in Birmingham, Ala.

The workshops are sponsored by the Southeastern Jurisdiction (SEJ) and the General Board of Church and Society.

A conflict resolution training session will be held for youth ages 12 to 18. Other workshops deal with Christian leadership in a world of pluralism, the Social Principles, racial justice, honoring differences, building bridges across faiths, teaching non-violence to children, violence in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and welcoming homosexuals.

Youth and young adult ministry directors are invited to Washington, D.C., Aug. 14-16 to learn how to connect social issues and public policy to their faith through the “Faith & Citizenship” seminars offered by the General Board of Church and Society. Contact: Ana Toledo, 202-488-5651.

The General Board of Global Ministries is asking churches to take a special offering once a month for the next three months to support the Churchwide Appeal for Africa Drought and Famine (Advance #101250-4). The board has also approved Advance #901315 for Texas flood relief.
