Social issues are where church meets society
The Methodist Church has a long history of social involvement, and John Wesley was an integral part of the church's early work on social issues. He was an outspoken proponent of justice for England's poor and a staunch opponent of slavery, especially as it existed in the United States.
More recently, United Methodist Bishops have been in Washington, D.C., seeking peace in the Middle East and more funding for child welfare programs. The United Methodist Church's General Board of Church and Society (GBCS) has issued documents that endorsed raising taxes on tobacco products, supported anti-cloning legislation, and supported the establishment of a Palestinian state to help bring peace to the Middle East.

Arts society gets one-of-a-kind donation
What does a church do when it receives a 1927 Wurlitzer organ that was once used to provide the sound track to silent movies as a donation? If the church is St. John's United Methodist Church here, it installs the organ in its sanctuary and begins using it to reach out to the community in new and creative ways.
The organ was donated to the Arts at St. John's, a non-profit corporation formed by the church, but separate from the church, so it can receive donations and government assistance, according to the Rev. Carol Hoffman-Guzman, a deacon in full connection working at the church.

Florida churches, conference take on social issues
While delegations of United Methodist bishops visit the White House and Capitol Hill trying to bring public policy in line with denominational principles, United Methodist clergy and laity from Florida are tackling tough regional and state issues with the same goal in mind.
Members of the conference's Church and Society ministry team are involved in direct action and support local churches in their attempts to address the root causes of social issues, according to Alma Manney.
Some of the issues that groups within the Florida Conference are addressing are violence and hatred, the state's death penalty and living wages for workers.

Bishop's wife shares ministry with spouses
For the past three years, the United Methodist Bishops' Spouses Association has had a covenant relationship with the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) to serve as mission interpreters in the annual conferences where they live.
Melba Whitaker, wife of Florida Conference Bishop Timothy W. Whitaker, will become the third episcopal wife to take such a trip this September. But Whitaker is not going alone. She is taking a team of six Florida Conference clergy spouses with her on a trip that's as much about building support for UMCOR as it is about building relationships and ministry among the spouses.
