foundation honors two from Florida
ORLANDO — Jose “Tony” Rey of Orlando was recently elected a
trustee for the Foundation for Evangelism in Lake Junaluska, N.C. Rey,
a native of Cuba, is a member and president of the council on
ministries at Christ Hispanic United Methodist Church here.
Rey heads the Rey Group, an Orlando construction
and development company and the 400th largest Hispanic business in the
United States.
ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Bishop Earl Gladstone Hunt Jr., former bishop of
the Florida Conference, was named a Lifetime Distinguished Evangelist
of the United Methodist Church by the Foundation for Evangelism.
Hunt, who served the Florida Conference from 1980 until 1988, was
recognized for his “exemplary lifetime accomplishments in the area
of evangelism,” according to a release from the Foundation. “In
all his endeavors, Bishop Hunt shared the love of Jesus Christ at
every opportunity.”
The Foundation for Evangelism was founded in 1949. Its mission is
to promote, encourage and provide resources for responsible evangelism
through the United Methodist Church. The Foundation is related to the
General Board of Discipleship and sponsors professorships and programs
throughout the world.
Florida Southern honors two conference
leaders
LAKELAND — Frank H. Furman and Bishop Timothy W. Whitaker
received honorary degrees from United Methodist-related Florida
Southern College at its commencement ceremony Dec. 14. Furman received
an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree, and Whitaker received an
honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree.
Furman is chairman of the Florida Conference’s Risk Management
committee. During his 26-year tenure as a trustee with Florida
Southern he served as chairman of the finance and executive committees
and vice chairman of the board.
Whitaker is also a member of Florida Southern’s board of trustees
and was honored for his years of service and leadership in the United
Methodist Church.
Florida Southern College is a four-year, private, coeducational
liberal arts college that offers more than 40 undergraduate majors.
