Conference Table works to finalize vision, mission
Participants at the third gathering of the Florida Conference's Conference Table reached a preliminary consensus on new vision and mission statements for the Florida Conference. Bishop Timothy W. Whitaker hopes to reach final agreement on the statements at the Feb. 15 gathering and then present them for final adoption by the 2003 Annual Conference in May.
More than 50 people met at Azalea Park United Methodist Church, Orlando, Dec. 7 for the first weekend gathering of the Conference Table.

Church uses holiday to raise awareness, help people
People from throughout the Hobe Sound community learned more about the world in which they live and helped some of the world's poorest people by simply buying Christmas presents.
More than 100 people from the surrounding community stopped by First United Methodist Church, Hobe Sound, Nov. 16-17 to do their Christmas shopping at the church's Alternative Gift Market, according to the Rev. Linda Standifer, the church's pastor. The church sold more than $4,400 worth of gift items.

Team sees Brazilian ministries in action
In September, a group of eight women-all Florida Conference clergy spouses- visited four Brazilian communities to observe firsthand the needs and dreams taking shape there. The team was led by Melba Whitaker, wife of Florida Conference Bishop Timothy Whitaker.
The trip was part of the United Methodist Bishops' Spouses Association's covenant relationship with the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), to serve as mission interpreters in their own conferences. It was intended to build support for the denomination's annual One Great Hour of Sharing offering, which funds UMCOR's administration and ongoing ministries, as well as increase missional support from the clergy spouses' home churches.

Churches get Biblical, business-like with finances
As churches attempt to deal with a sagging national economy, reduced giving on Sunday mornings and increasing costs, several are turning to the Bible for ideas on improving their finances, while others are using business principles.
Almost 20 percent of churches that responded to an e-mail survey said they are emphasizing stewardship and tithing among their members as a way to increase giving. Many of those churches said they are also honest and open with members about the financial situation. Others are refinancing loans, applying for grants and forming outside partnerships.
