Floridians help Haitian Methodists connect
Some members and pastors of the Methodist Church of Haiti believed the Methodist Church was an isolated church in Haiti, according to the Rev. Jacques Pierre. That belief has begun to change in part because of efforts by members of the Florida Conference who sponsored and participated in the Institute of Preaching in Haiti.
The Institute of Preaching is an annual event in the Florida Conference. It is funded by an endowment given by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sherman, United Methodists from Florida who believed in "good Biblical preaching," according to the Rev. Dr. Gene Zimmerman, a retired pastor and chairman of the committee on the Institute of Preaching. Full Story

Native American pastor appointed to ministry
The Rev. Delton Collins, a local pastor from the West North Carolina Conference, will soon be leading the Florida Conference's efforts to reach and minister to the state's Native American population.
Collins, a Lumby Indian, was appointed pastor of the Brighton Seminole Reservation at this year's Annual Conference Event May 28-31 in Lakeland. The reservation is located in the Fort Myers District.

Churches help neighbors bounce back after red tide
They have survived hurricanes, bay closures and new net laws, but some residents of Eastpoint, Fla., who make their living catching and harvesting seafood in the Apalachicola Bay say they have never experienced anything like the red tide that hit late last year.
Residents are bouncing back from the red tide's devastating economic effects, though, thanks to an ecumenical relief effort by local churches, including four area United Methodist churches.

Women help school kids WIN
Public school teachers and principals are glad for any help people in the community can offer them, especially when it involves spending one-on-one time with children, according to Judy Perod.
For two years, the women at First United Methodist Church, Dunedin, filled that need by giving local school children one-on-one attention and tutoring through a ministry called WIN, which stands for Women in Nurturing.

United Methodists launch long-term 9/11 response
Using nearly $20 million raised in donations, the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is launching a long-term plan to address the impact of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Specific proposals-ranging from the creation of a New York-based program to assist the secondary victims of the World Trade Center attacks to the establishment of a field office in Kabul,
Afghanistan-were approved by UMCOR directors during the April 15-18 meeting of the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries, its parent body.
