CHURCH DEVELOPMENT

Bishop Henderson’s Invitation: Strengthen The Black Church

By Charles W. Courtoy
Executive Director of Church Development

Charles Courtoy, Executive Director of Church Development“The 1996 General Conference of the United Methodist Church called the church to accept the responsibility of strengthening the black church. In 1998, in a response to this call, a group of 100 church leaders, lay and clergy, journeyed to Atlanta to learn from leaders of dynamic African-American churches in that city. We came away inspired and encouraged to continue to grow in our effectiveness to share the Good News of Jesus with our brothers and sisters.

“I invite you to join me at Florida Southern College May 13-15 for the second phase of the Florida Atlanta Connection Experience (FACE) called ‘Strengthening the Black Church: The Bishop’s Call to Excellence.’ It will feature powerful teaching by outstanding African-American pastors, and the music will lift you to the very gates of heaven.

“When Jesus shared with the woman at the well in Samaria, she became a witness because she recognized Jesus as the savior of the world. Her excitement over finding the Messiah led her to hurry back to her town to invite her friends and neighbors: ‘Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done!’

“Come to this exciting time at Florida Southern College so that you and your congregation may be equipped to say to your brothers and sisters, ‘Come and see Jesus, the savior of the world!’ ”
