Men challenged to connect
Nearly 1,400 men from the Florida, Alabama-West Florida and South Georgia conferences were challenged to have courage in reaching unchurched people, caring for their neighbors and praying to God at the second Bishops' Invitational for Christ's Men June 24 at the Leon County Civic Center here.
Three guest speakers, one from each conference, addressed the theme "Ask, Seek, Knock" taken from Matthew 7:7.

DeLand District churches make inroads with each other, community
"People are afraid to talk to strangers, and that includes clergy and laity," said Mont Duncan, superintendent of the DeLand District. "We let our perceptions of the negative prevent letting our churches reach out to the community. Through Celebrate Jesus, the fear has been removed. It's been a freeing experience."
Ten United Methodist churches in the DeLand District participated in last month's Celebrate Jesus Mission and discovered new ways of being in ministry to the unchurched, lost and hurting in their neighborhoods.

Church, DOT reach tentative agreement
About a year ago, the Florida Department of Transportation (DOT) presented First United Methodist Church, Land O' Lakes, with plans for the expansion of U.S. 41 that limited access to the church. Since then, the church has been working with the state agency to find a way to provide safe access to the church.
"We wanted to be a good example…We didn't want to put the DOT in a bad light," said the Rev. Kent Crow, the church's pastor "We're trying to approach this by being the church, being patient, prayerful and hopeful, and not giving up."

Church opens door for
racial unity
The May 4 service of repentance and reconciliation for racism at the United Methodist 2000 General Conference inspired the Rev. Tom Otto, former pastor of Ellenton United Methodist Church in Ellenton, to do the same thing locally. Now, church members and community residents are hoping that the June 11 worship service and "Litany of Racial and Community Reconciliation" will grow into a new era of cooperation in their community.

Puerto Rican Methodists celebrate history, plan for future
Unity and celebration were the hallmarks of the third general conference and eighth annual conference events of the autonomous Methodist Church of Puerto Rico June 6-11 in San Juan, P.R. The event also marked 100 years of Methodist presence and service on the island.
