SEJ elects three bishops, makes covenant with Emory
    Delegates to the 2000 Southeastern Jurisdictional (SEJ) Conference July 12-15 in Lake Junaluska, N.C., elected three new bishops to replace three who retired this year; debated a number of resolutions, many of which focused on United Methodist-owned Emory University in Atlanta; and elected members to general boards and agencies, including four from the Florida Conference. Council elects new chairman 
    The Florida Conference Council on Ministries (CCOM) elected the Rev. Jim Harnish, pastor of Hyde Park United Methodist Church, its new chairman, replacing the Rev. Thom Shafer, who left the position last June after being named superintendent of the Jacksonville District.
    Harnish said he believes his election is "a call from God as much as a call from the council itself" and is excited about his role in planning for the future of the Florida Conference. Full Story
   
      

Church finds calling in computer ministry  
Local businesses, government offices and churches, as well as the Florida Conference, have partnered with Calvary United Methodist Church in Tallahassee to help the church provide much-needed computer skills training to its community. The laity of the church are working to ensure the ministry's success now and in the future.

Florida laywoman chosen to teach in Africa
  Delia Halverson, a member of Cypress Lake United Methodist Church and chairwoman of the Florida Conference's Discipleship Ministry team, spent five days last June in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, teaching Christian education skills and methods to 40 Congolese United Methodist clergy and laypeople.
   Halverson said her first trip to Africa was one of learning, as well as teaching, for her.

Celebrate Jesus seeks minority leadership
    
A lack of ethnic minorities signing up for Celebrate Jesus missions is a challenge the Florida-based ministry is working to address, according to Alan Poole, executive director of Celebrate Jesus Missions. The shortage of ethnic volunteers led to the cancellation of a local church mission last June in St. Petersburg and the rejection of the Miami District's application for a mission in 2001.
