Women explore 21st-century missions

Understanding the changing reality of mission and the world in which mission takes place is one of the goals of the 1999 Florida Conference School of Christian Mission July 10-23 at Florida Southern College in Lakeland. The event is sponsored by the United Methodist Women (UMW) and is open to everyone.

The school will offer the opportunity to explore ways of understanding the compilation and interpretation of the Bible and how to be in mission to the growing population of older adults. There will be activities for children and youth from kindergarten through eighth grade, officer training, focus groups, a literature room and child care. Weekend classes will be taught is Spanish, Creole and Korean.

Core Weeks focuses on key ministries

Practicing faith in the modern world is the topic for the Core Weeks Summer ’99 program of the Ministry Division of the Southeastern Jurisdictional Administrative Council.

The four five-day events will be held at Lake Junaluska, N.C., and will focus on various key ministries of modern churches. Keynote speakers will be pastors and leaders from United Methodist and other churches from across the country.

n Wesleyan Heritage Week, June 28-July 1 — A study of John Wesley’s approach to controversy and how it might be helpful in dealing with some of the current doctrinal, political and missional controversies in the denomination is the focus of this week. Dr. Gregory Jones, dean of the Divinity School, and Dr. Richard Heitzenrater, professor of church history and Methodist studies at Duke, will be the primary presenters.

  • Evangelism Week, July 12-16 — "Becoming the Church for the Unchurched" is the title of this event, which focuses on ministries that are successfully reaching out to groups in a variety of ways. Keynote speakers include pastors of three United Methodist Churches with successful evangelism ministries.
  • Servant Leadership Week, July 26-30 — This week offers an in-depth strategy event focusing on the servant model of church leadership. Leading change, the principles of Servant Leadership and Covey leadership principles will be among the topics discussed by experienced leadership consultants.
  • Spiritual Formation Week, August 1-5 — Those yearning to go deeper in their spiritual life and explore the ethnic origins of Christian traditions are encouraged to attend the Spiritual Formation Week. Topics include laughter and play, the labyrinth, American Indian spirituality, multi-cultural spirituality and Celtic Christianity. Pastors from a variety of denominations and locations will lead the workshops.
