Recent visitors to Russia say Wesleyan tradition is very
effective at growing a church without buildings.
LAKELAND Larry Rankin, director of the Florida Conference
Council on Ministries Missions office, recently spent two weeks visiting United
Methodist Churches in Russia and Estonia. The trip gave him the opportunity to see
the work of the church in Russia and bring that information back to the
Florida Conference, he said. One of the things he observed was a church largely without
buildings that is moving ahead in ministry and worship. Full Story

Teleconference
shows need for caring adults
LAKELAND Our culture and even our language are
inherently violent, said Jerel A. Eaglin, director of Youth Services for the National
Crime Prevention Council in Washington, D.C., and a panelist for the May 18 teleconference
Kids, Guns, Violence: Making a Difference. Everyday phrases like taking
a shot at something or riding in the shotgun seat reflect a casual
attitude toward violence that is affecting children, he said. Although its unlikely
we can change American culture, Eaglin and the other teleconference panelists agreed there
are steps adults can take to stop the rising tide of violence by children. Full Story |
Hunger for ministry satisfied at teas
ST. CLOUD
On an envelope which she carries in her personal planner, the Rev. Deborah McKown
has a list of all the women under the age of 55 who attend First United Methodist Church,
St. Cloud. That list was developed during a brainstorming session she had with several of
the young women of the congregation on how to minister to younger people. The women listed
were invited to a series of teas that have sparked their interest in the United Methodist
Women (UMW). And now, there are new UMW groups of younger women at the church.

Union ready for Y2K
President offers suggestions for personal
preparation.
LAKELAND Members of the Florida United Methodist Credit Union
can rest assured that their money will be safe well into the next millennium, according to
Credit Union President Joan Beierle. The Credit Union, under the watchful eye of the State
of Florida Comptrollers Office, has been preparing for the year 2000 and its
anticipated computer problems for more than a year. Beierle also offers some advice to
individuals wanting to prepare for what the new year may bring. Full Story |
