Rate hikes mean churches pay more

Florida Conference churches will pay $745 a month beginning Jan. 1 for health insurance for each full-time, appointed, itinerating clergy person. That's a 38 percent increase over the $540 churches are paying this year.
The main reason for that increase is a 46.57 percent increase in the rates charged by Blue Cross/Blue Shield, one of two insurance providers serving the conference, according the Rev. David Dodge, executive director of the conference's Division of Ministry. Cigna is the other provider.  Full Story

Media campaign ignites changes in Bushnell church
Members of St. Catherine United Methodist Church in Bushnell battled brush, bees and a build-up of dirt and even launched some balloons to make their church more visible and appealing to visitors.
The recent flurry of activity at the 134-year-old church was inspired by the denomination's "Igniting Ministry" media campaign, according to the Rev. Haig Medzarentz, the church's pastor. Full Story

Other church costs rise in 2002
It is going to cost more next year to be a Florida Conference United Methodist Church.
The largest increase churches will face is the cost of clergy health insurance, but other clergy-related increases are expected.
Churches will pay more for both clergy health insurance and church property insurance next year. The minimum salary for ordained and licensed pastors is increasing, and the apportionments churches pay to the conference and general church are rising.   Full Story

Churches focus on community
Juvenile offenders, senior citizens and commuters in Orange County are living improved lives, thanks in part to efforts by members of Trinity United Methodist Church here.
The church's impact is being felt through its involvement with FOCUS - Federation of Congregations United to Serve. FOCUS is an interfaith organization that organizes and equips member churches to act city- or countywide to improve the quality of life, according to Janice Everson, a FOCUS organizer.  Full Story

Leaders offered insight to change
Healthy churches are churches with a healthy amount of internal and external tension, which results from or leads to change, according to Gil Rendle, Alban Institute consulting director. Satisfied churches are churches that have an established pattern and would benefit from some tension.
Rendle's comments were part of his three-stop tour of the Florida Conference in which he offered advice to pastors and church leaders on change and tension within local congregations.  Full Story

Ministry has high hopes after drought
This winter's citrus crop in Florida is going to be better than in the past four years because of September's heavy rainfall, according to estimates by the United States Department of Agriculture. The Society of St. Andrew (SoSA), a gleaning ministry that collects unmarketable food from growers and distributes it to feeding ministries, is looking for ways to take advantage of the improved harvest by widening its base of support in Florida.
The Oct. 13 Potato Drop at Orlando's Christ Hispanic United Methodist Church was one step in that effort. Christ church is the first Hispanic church to participate in a SoSA event.  Full Story
