Conference Table reconvenes with new focus
The Conference Table is back, and it
has a lot on its plate for the Florida Conference to digest.
The theme for the next Conference Table meeting Sept.
12 at Lake Gibson United Methodist Church, Lakeland, is
Ministry Culture: the Conference, the Community, the
Congregation and Clergy Family, with a focus on transforming
clergy culture.
"We are in the middle of a 30- or 40-year span where
traditional roles of both the clergy and laity are changing,"
said the Rev. Dr. Anne Burkholder, the conference's new
director of Connectional Ministries. "Only recently have we
been able to articulate what is happening. We [the conference]
are attempting to escort churches and clergy through this
shift in a healthy way."

Vietnamese translation is latest for Lay Speakers
Approximately 2,000 Vietnamese
United Methodists living in the United States will soon have a
new resource to help them in their church leadership and
Christian discipleship, thanks to cooperative efforts between
the General Board of Discipleship and the Florida and Texas
conferences.
The Lay Speaking Ministry Basic Course was recently
translated into Vietnamese by the director of Asian ministries
in the Texas Conference through a $19,200 grant the Florida
Conference Lay Speaking Ministry received in 1999 from the
General Board of Discipleship.

Seniors
prove you're never too old to share God's love
They are ordinary men and women who refused to allow their age to
prevent them from going on a mission trip to Ecuador. All but one of
the 14 mission team members of Wesley United Methodist Church,
Melbourne, were between ages 50 to 81, with six older than 65.
The team partnered with the Methodist Church in Santo
Domingo de los Colorados, Ecuador, and assisted with everything from
mixing and pouring cement by hand to creating sidewalks around
buildings at the church complex.
"It was a very spiritual time," 81-year-old Juanita
Auvil said. "It's something I've always wanted to do, to see if I
could help someone else. When the opportunity arose, how could I not
take it?"

Summer program journeys around globe
When the Vacation Bible School material
Judy Edie examined didn't have what she wanted she and church member
Tracey Jones created their own.
Edie, children's ministry coordinator at Middleburg
United Methodist Church, decided to highlight diversity for the
children in the predominately Anglo congregation by studying the
people and cultures of five countries, along with selected chapters
and verses from the Bible.
"We wanted to open their eyes to other types of
people," Edie said. "We wanted them to know God loves them all."

'Word-orials'
reveal hidden lives
George VanWyck has the members of First
United Methodist Church here lining up for his message each week,
and he's not the pastor of the congregation.
VanWyck is the creator of "word-orials" or profiles of
church members. He began interviewing and writing the one-page,
front and back profiles late last year and has managed to produce
about 40. They are available each Sunday morning after worship
service.
"I've had people tell me this is the best thing to
happen to this church," VanWyck said. "I think it's helping us to
get to know each other better and bring people closer together."
