Churches speak for voiceless at summit

As mainstream media focused on acts of violence and protestors at the Nov. 20-21 Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) Summit in Miami, the church was speaking for the voiceless, without taking sides in the highly politicized arena, according to the Rev. Clarke Campbell-Evans, superintendent of the conference's Miami District.

The goal of FTAA is to create a hemispheric economic community. The function of the church is to make certain the needs of the environment and migrant workers are being met, according to Campbell-Evans.

"We want to listen, to give voice to the voiceless and to ask the questions about what will happen to the poor in Latin America and in our country as business moves south," he said.

Fulford United Methodist Church in North Miami Beach gave food and shelter to 300 demonstrators walking from Dania Beach to the meeting in Miami. About 40 church members served meals to the demonstrators, and many participated in scheduled candlelight vigils and roundtable discussions.

First United Methodist Church, Miami, opened its doors for about a dozen organizations to make presentations throughout the week.    Full Story

First scholarships awarded in memory of local pastor

The Rev. Barbara Odom was a wife, mother and employee, yet she couldn't deny the calling the Lord had placed on her life. She died Dec. 4, 2002, after faithfully serving as a leader and pastor in the Florida Conference.

As a tribute to her life and journey in ministry her husband, Donald R. Odom Sr., established the Barbara Odom Course of Study Scholarship Fund in her memory. The first recipients were recognized during a Dec. 7 worship service at Lakewood United Methodist Church in St. Petersburg.

Susan Baron of St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Tampa and Diane Gutierrez of Woodlands United Methodist Church in Ft. Lauderdale each received $500 from the fund, which awards the scholarships in part based on the financial need of applicants. Full Story

Pastor invited to Ukraine to teach

As a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force Auxiliary, the Rev. Ralph Rivers is concerned with keeping soldiers safe, but the military chaplain is equally concerned about caring for the souls of soldiers. And soon he'll get a chance to actively address that concern.

Rivers, pastor at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Fort Myers, was invited by Olive Branch International, a humanitarian service to the international military community, to visit the Ukraine to teach pastoral care for two weeks in June 2004.

"Pastoral care is equally as important as health care," River said. "There is often emotional and spiritual pain involved with the care of soldiers who have been hurt. I'm going to be talking about a balanced healing process."  Full Story

Churches strive for ways to prepare confirmands

Confirmation is an opportunity for young people to make a public proclamation of their faith in Christ and become official members of a local United Methodist church. For many it is the first detailed and coordinated opportunity to grasp the big picture of the Christian faith and its theology.

Local churches and pastors continue to wrestle with developing creative methods for ensuring the confirmation experience is one of spiritual growth and significance for young United Methodists. So do Florida Conference ministry teams.   Full Story
