Georgia man begins yearlong walk in Florida
Marty Burson on a yearlong walk through the United States. On Jan. 1, 40-year-old Marty Burson started a yearlong walk through the United States. His goal, says the member of First United Methodist Church in Albany, Ga., is to share his love for Jesus and Jesus' love for humanity with everyone he meets along the way.
    "One of the things I hope to accomplish is to bring an awareness of the love Jesus Christ has for all mankind and the love I have for Jesus Christ," he said, "and to let people know about the wonderful powers of the Holy Ghost."

Large churches learn from Florida church     
     Christ Church United Methodist in Ft. Lauderdale served as host and teacher to more than 300 United Methodists from across the United States last month. The event was designed to give pastors, staff and laity from large churches the chance to learn from other growing and dynamic large churches.
    "The focus of the event is on how to help United Methodism regain life among the larger churches," said the Rev. Jim Harnish, pastor of Tampa's Hyde Park United Methodist Church, a church with nearly 1,500 members. "It helps reinvigorate and re-energize the larger congregations."

Cuban bishop helps Pine Castle church celebrate new millennium   
The Rev. Ricardo Pereira, bishop of the Methodist Church in CubaThe Rev. Ricardo Pereira, bishop of the Methodist Church in Cuba, spent four days last month at Pine Castle United Methodist Church preaching, anointing, praying and urging church members to do God's will. The Bishop's visit was part of the Orlando church's "Seeking God's Face" theme for the year 2000.
    "Individuals and families filled the altars for confession and prayer," said the Rev. Blake Lorenz, the church's senior pastor. "Hungry hearts seeking more of God's blessing fell under the power of God as the bishop prayed for them."  Full Story

Youth make impact through lay speaking
Chris SellYouth lay speakers now make up almost 10 percent of the active participants in the Florida Conference's Lay Speaking Ministry, according to Glenna Kyker Brayton, the conference's director of Lay Speaking. Some of the more than 135 youth lay speakers are using their training to help fill leadership rolls within their churches.
    Chris Sell, a member of Cypress Lake United Methodist Church in Ft. Myers, has been a lay speaker for less than a year, but is already a leader in his church's effort to attract young people and families.
