Georgia man
begins yearlong walk in Florida
On Jan. 1, 40-year-old Marty Burson started a
yearlong walk through the United States. His goal, says the member of First United
Methodist Church in Albany, Ga., is to share his love for Jesus and Jesus' love for
humanity with everyone he meets along the way.
"One of the things I hope to accomplish is to bring an awareness
of the love Jesus Christ has for all mankind and the love I have for Jesus Christ,"
he said, "and to let people know about the wonderful powers of the Holy Ghost."

Large churches learn from
Florida church
Christ Church United Methodist in Ft. Lauderdale served as host
and teacher to more than 300 United Methodists from across the United States last month.
The event was designed to give pastors, staff and laity from large churches the chance to
learn from other growing and dynamic large churches.
"The focus of the event is on how to help United Methodism regain
life among the larger churches," said the Rev. Jim Harnish, pastor of Tampa's Hyde
Park United Methodist Church, a church with nearly 1,500 members. "It helps
reinvigorate and re-energize the larger congregations." Full Story

Cuban bishop helps Pine
Castle church celebrate new millennium
The Rev. Ricardo Pereira, bishop
of the Methodist Church in Cuba, spent four days last month at Pine Castle United
Methodist Church preaching, anointing, praying and urging church members to do God's will.
The Bishop's visit was part of the Orlando church's "Seeking God's Face" theme
for the year 2000.
"Individuals and families filled the altars for confession and
prayer," said the Rev. Blake Lorenz, the church's senior pastor. "Hungry hearts
seeking more of God's blessing fell under the power of God as the bishop prayed for
them." Full Story

Youth make impact through lay
speaking
Youth lay speakers now make up almost 10 percent of the active participants
in the Florida Conference's Lay Speaking Ministry, according to Glenna Kyker Brayton, the
conference's director of Lay Speaking. Some of the more than 135 youth lay speakers are
using their training to help fill leadership rolls within their churches.
Chris Sell, a member of Cypress Lake United Methodist Church in Ft.
Myers, has been a lay speaker for less than a year, but is already a leader in his
church's effort to attract young people and families. Full
