Annual event focuses on conference's future
From the "No More Playing Church" training experience to debate over conference finances and the structure of the Conference's Council on Ministries (CCOM), much of the attention of the 976 clergy and 969 lay delegates to the Dare to Share Jesus 2000 Florida Annual Conference Event May 30-June 2 focused on the future.

Conference opens with celebration of hope
"What we have done is great," Florida Bishop Cornelius L. Henderson said to the delegates at the Dare to Share Jesus 2000 Florida Annual Conference Event. "But the real task is ahead of us."
The bishop's sermon was part of the event's opening celebration, which also included a processional of new churches started in the past year and a tribute to the work of the Council of Bishops' Initiative on Children and Poverty.

Training experience gives life to conference
Despite feelings that the title was negative and judgmental, many participants in the "No More Playing Church" Training Experience at the Dare to Share Jesus 2000 Florida Annual Conference Event felt the training gave new life to the annual gathering.
"The business meeting part of annual conference is overwhelmingly boring, but necessary," said Diana McGee, a member of First United Methodist Church, Ft. Myers. "It was a nice break to feel like you're getting something to talk about back at the church."

Cuban rhythms, blessing highlight celebration
Nearly 200 Florida Conference clergy and laity responded to a call by Cuban Bishop Ricardo Pereira to receive the anointing of the Holy Spirit during the Cuba Florida Covenant Celebration Experience at the Dare to Share Jesus 2000 Florida Annual Conference Event.
The Cuban bishop's sermon was part of an evening-long celebration of Cuban spirituality that also included performances by the Monte de Sión Praise Band from Havana and two Cuban ballerinas.

United Methodists of all ages from across the Florida Conference
spent four days in Lakeland celebrating the work of the church and planning
for its future. Delegates and guests celebrated the opening of 10 new
churches in the conference during the past year and the 104 conference
ministries helped by grants through the Council of Bishops’ Initiative on
Children and Poverty.
