Disaster coordinators say Floyds near-hit was good dry
run |
Many United Methodists spent the second week of September
preparing for the worst from Hurricane Floyd. Although Floyd spared Florida the brunt of
its strength, Florida Conference staff and disaster response coordinators say the
preparations were well worth the trouble and will only make future response efforts more

Churches open their
doors to people and pets fleeing Floyd
While
many of Central Floridas major attractions shut their doors in anticipation of last
months Hurricane Floyd, many United Methodist churches kept their door open, serving
as shelters for people and pets. And while it rained cats and dogs outside, inside two
Florida Conference churches, cats, dogs, gerbils, ferrets, birds and rabbits and their

Florida United Methodists take no
chances with Floyd
At four times the size of Hurricane
Andrew, weather forecasters were calling Hurricane Floyd the biggest storm to threaten the
U. S. mainland. Among the estimated two million evacuees were United Methodists, some of
whom remembered Hurricane Andrew.
I just happened to be in Miami for work three months after
Hurricane Andrew, said Bill Touchton, chairman board of trustees at Mims United
Methodist Church. I know theyre [hurricanes] nothing to fool around
with.

United Methodists
respond to disasters
The months of August and September saw
natural disasters strike all parts of the world. In the wake of these catastrophes, United
Methodists are preparing to provide resources and assistance to the people affected.
In the United States, United Methodists in five annual conferences are
preparing for long-term relief and recovery efforts in the wake of Hurricane Floyd. In
Taiwan and Turkey, the United Methodist church is looking for ways to bring relief to
those affected by two deadly earthquakes.
United Methodists in the Florida Conference are asked to help with
donations of money and time.
