United Methodist Children's
Home faces major cutbacks
A
three-year decline in the number of estate gifts given to the Florida United Methodist
Children's Home has left trustees with a $500,000 budget shortfall for 1999 and the task
of making cuts in the budget without reducing the number of children the home can
accommodate.
Since 1991, the home has been receiving an average of about $1
million per year in undesignated estates. Two years ago, the bottom fell out, and that
giving dropped by two-thirds. The next year it was down by three-quarters. This year the
children's home will get less than a quarter of what they used to get.

Expo offers
singles chance to get out
"Many singles say, 'It's so hard to
motivate myself to get out of the house,' " said Arlene Shannon, director of the
Florida Conference Single Adult Leadership Team (SALT) and director of singles ministries
at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Orlando.
Despite that fact, nearly 275 single adults from different
denominations and as far away as Texas and Indiana were motivated to attend the
"Adventures in Orlando" Singles Expo Oct. 1-3.
