United Methodist Children's Home faces major cutbacks
Photo: United Methodist Children's Home     A three-year decline in the number of estate gifts given to the Florida United Methodist Children's Home has left trustees with a $500,000 budget shortfall for 1999 and the task of making cuts in the budget without reducing the number of children the home can accommodate.
     Since 1991, the home has been receiving an average of about $1 million per year in undesignated estates. Two years ago, the bottom fell out, and that giving dropped by two-thirds. The next year it was down by three-quarters. This year the children's home will get less than a quarter of what they used to get.

Delegates prepare for conferences
     The Florida Conference's delegates to the 2000 United Methodist General and Southeastern Jurisdictional conferences met Oct. 2 in Leesburg to discuss issues they will deal with at the denomination's global conference in Cleveland, Oh., next April and the jurisdictional meeting in July.         
     They also met to nominate a Florida Conference candidate for the office of Bishop.
Richard J. "Dick" Wills      The Rev. Dr. Richard J. "Dick" Wills, pastor of Christ Church United Methodist in Ft. Lauderdale, was nominated by the delegates after a time of worship, discernment and prayer, according to the Rev. Jim Harnish, chairman of the conference's elections procedures committee and pastor of Hyde Park United Methodist Church in Tampa. Full Story
Expo offers singles chance to get out
Photo: Singles Expo "Many singles say, 'It's so hard to motivate myself to get out of the house,' " said Arlene Shannon, director of the Florida Conference Single Adult Leadership Team (SALT) and director of singles ministries at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Orlando.
    Despite that fact, nearly 275 single adults from different denominations and as far away as Texas and Indiana were motivated to attend the "Adventures in Orlando" Singles Expo Oct. 1-3.
