District's long-term plan nets grant for ads
The West Palm Beach District's plans to enhance the Igniting Ministry media campaign with local advertising and training have earned it a matching-funds grant of $48,355 from United Methodist Communications (UMCom).
The district is buying 63 television spots over 10 days in late March at a cost of $96,710, according to Craig Stephens, director of communication ministries at Trinity United Methodist Church, Palm Beach Gardens, and a member of the district committee. Since the district includes two major media markets, Miami/Ft. Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, the ads will be seen on six television stations.

Conference ready to build school, expand ministry
It took Florida Conference churches a little more than six months to raise the money needed to build the Bishop Cornelius L. and Dorothye Henderson Secondary School. Now, conference leaders are preparing to go back to Africa to begin construction.
To date conference churches have given $265,599.50 to the school, which will be built in Muxungue, Mozambique, Africa.
The next step is outlining the phases of the building project. A small group from the conference will visit Mozambique this spring to meet with builders and explore housing options for a United Methodist Volunteers in Mission team that will help build the school.

Laity-led ministry cares for hurting members
Many Florida Conference pastors are consumed by the latest "fires" and do not have time for members who were formerly on their list of urgent priorities. First United Methodist Church, Lakeland, has taken great strides to reach into that gap and find those who are still in need and pain.
The church's 24-year-old Care Ministry has an army of more than 100 volunteers who do everything from sending cards to paying visits to baking and delivering casseroles.

Florida church joins team to help Duke teach clergy
Hyde Park United Methodist Church here has been selected as one of 15 churches to participate in Duke Divinity School's new Teaching Congregations program, a five-year program offering scholarships and summer ministry and learning opportunities to future clergy.
In return for its participation, Hyde Park will have the opportunity to take advantage of the learning opportunities Duke Divinity School offers. The church will also have an opportunity to help Duke Divinity School learn.

Tallahassee churches respond to red tide
United Methodist churches in the Tallahassee District are working to help the approximately 2,400 seafood workers who lost combined wages of more than $1.5 million during a two-month layoff caused by a red tide.
The challenge for area churches is to find ways to help people who need assistance with food and housing, and have medical and transportation concerns.n.
