Church experiences rebirth
Debose Chapel United Methodist Church near Ocala has
overcome the odds.
The small rural congregation was struggling and giving
serious consideration to removing itself from the
denomination. But that was before Gainesville District
Superintendent the Rev. Dr. Geraldine McClellan visited the
church and its new supply pastor, the Rev. Robert Willingham,
arrived.
Now, Sunday worship attendance has gone from a meager
few to a packed sanctuary. The church made this
turn-around not in years or even several months, but within
six to eight weeks.

Some
seminary graduates opt out of local church work
The Rev. Kenneth Johnson, 26, watched as his peers at Duke Divinity
School chose alternative paths with which to use their Masters of
Divinity degrees, but for him there was never a decision to be made.
He always knew he would enter the local church and focus on racial
reconciliation.
Other graduates aren't so sure the local church is
their mission field, choosing academic positions or campus
ministries, instead.
Where that leaves the local church is open to debate.

Conference says young adult ministry is important
Even though the Conference Council on
Ministries' (CCOM) Young Adult Ministry team voluntarily surrendered
its 2004 funding last May, that doesn't mean the conference has
abandoned young adult programming or its young people.
It's quite the opposite, and the team is working to get its ministry
back on track, according to the Rev. Meredith McMillan, the team's
chairwoman.
"The conference has not given up on young adult
ministry," she said. "…We need people to be involved who have a
passion for young adult ministry."

New
ministry offers assistance to pastors, families
Pastors are the people church members,
and many times community leaders, turn to in times of crisis and
celebration. But who takes care of the conference's ministers and
their families when they need support?
A new conference ministry being led by a group of
active and retired clergy, spouses and laity called Shade and Fresh
Water may be the answer."

Igniting Ministry grants help church raise awareness
The national Igniting Ministry office has
awarded the Tampa District two matching grants, one that allowed the
district to air commercials during the busy back-to-school time and
another to air commercials during Advent.
The grant provided $5,472 or half the $10,044 cost of
airing 96 commercials Sept. 3-13. The same amount will be given to
air 96 commercials during Advent. The district is funding its half
of the matching grants through its Council of Ministries.
