Florida Conference Gives Birth To Two New Churches

District churches build bridges, cross cultural lines
Cans of Coca-Cola and origami cranes were some of the tools United Methodists used to share Jesus in the St. Petersburg District last month. The district's weeklong Celebrate Jesus Mission involved 12 churches, many of which used the opportunity to build new relationships across cultural lines.

Groups begin search for new leaders
The Florida Conference has been without a permanent treasurer since the Rev. Tom Marston resigned last March, and a $665,000 grant from the denomination's General Board of Global Ministries has paved the way for the Miami District to develop a model for ministry to unchurched people. Now, the Conference Council on Finance and Administration and the Miami District are looking for applicants to fill two leadership positions.

New church launches new mission
In its first year of existence, Baymeadows CrossRoad Mission in Jacksonville gave $10,000 to help New Life Community Church get started, according to the Rev. Paul Butler, former chairman of the conference's Committee on New Church Development and Church Redevelopment. Last June, New Life passed that gift on when it commissioned seven people to begin a new mission in a recently closed United Methodist Church.

Listening is key to ministry
East Naples United Methodist Church has been training Christians to provide compassionate care to people who are experiencing life changes through the national Stephen Ministry program. Today, 54 of the 60 people trained are still active and helping as many as four people each, according to Dr. Earl and Margo Shields, coordinators of the church's Stephen Ministry program.

Bishop sets date for special session
Bishop Cornelius L. Henderson announced that the special fall session of the Dare to Share Jesus 2000 Florida Annual Conference Event will be Oct. 5 at Morrison United Methodist Church in Leesburg. The purpose of the session is to address conference financial matters, including the 2001 budget.
