Training weekend helps churches bridge gaps
   "God's going to be in the future, whether we are or not," said the Rev. Leonard Sweet, author and church consultant on the postmodern age. "If God so loved the world why can't we? Why can't the church? Why are we trying so hard to get out of something God is trying so hard to get into - the world?"
Sweet told the 630 laity and clergy attending this year's Discipleship Weekend here that they need to start thinking differently if they want to reach the younger generations with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Leaders plan first common table 
    Leaders of the various ministries, agencies, boards and committees of the Florida Conference need a safe place to gather and talk about fulfilling the vision and mission given by the conference's bishop, Cornelius L. Henderson, according to the Rev. Jim Harnish, pastor of Tampa's Hyde Park United Methodist Church and chairman of the Conference Council on Ministries.
    Providing that forum for discussion is the goal of the first Florida Conference common table meeting Nov. 4 at the Hyde Park church.

Kilbourn sentenced on federal, state charges  
   Lawrence Kilbourn, a former Florida Conference United Methodist elder, was sentenced last month on both federal child pornography and state sexual battery charges.

New church finds success in contextual ministry
   Members of The Grapevine, A United Methodist Church, in Port St. Lucie see themselves as missionaries to their local community. To reach young families, commuters, shift workers and others in their neighborhood, church members have had to learn to do church in different ways and at different times. One example is the Saturday evening "Grape Stomp" service which is "very family-oriented, chaos-filled," according to the Rev. Vance Rains, the church's pastor.
